Facilities at ITFC

For researchers

ITFC is well equipped for a basic but comfortable stay by a beautiful forest.  All our buildings are powered with solar energy and rainwater is collected from the roofs in tanks for daily use. Each building has its own pit latrine and the houses and dorm have a fire place for cold evenings.

The office block houses a library, a herbarium and basic laboratory. Communication with the outside world is possible by mobile phone (MTN and Zain networks) and the institute has a reliable internet connection by satellite, thanks to AFSAT.

Some research and camping equipment are available, but it is best to check requirements in advance and budget for your own specialist equipment. Vehicles for transport to field sites are available.

Student researchers are accommodated in a dormitory, with 3 shared bedrooms and a common room annex dining/kitchen area.

Long stay ITFC visitors/researchers may be accommodated in the 'Rock house' with 2 bedrooms and a living room.

Furthermore, ITFC has a ‘Conservation Education Centre’, where up to 20 people can sleep. It has a large central meeting room suitable for presentations, workshops and classes.

Contact us well in time to check availability and make reservations.

For tourists:

ITFC also has a small and basic guesthouse next to the UWA ranger post at Ruhija gate, with 2 bedrooms (3 bunk beds each, bed sheets and blankets are provided). Bookings must  be made in advance, and can otherwise not be guaranteed. We do not provide meals, but an assistant is at hand to help prepare your meals and fire if you wish. Alternatively there are places to eat in Ruhija village. Note that for any activities in the park, visitors must pay entrance and guide fees to UWA. We do not provide bird guides, nor can we book gorilla tracking permits.
